THE JOY OF GIVING

THE JOY OF GIVING
It was the Dusserah festival.  The Rajah went through the streets of the town so that his people might see him, and receive food and gifts from his hands.
In the crowd was a beggar, pushing forward eagerly.  His wooden bowl contained a handful of rice given to him by one who rode ahead of the Rajah’s elephant-cade.  But the beggar was not satisfied with rice; he had come in the hope of getting some silver, or may be even a gold coin.  He struggled to get nearer the Rajah’s elephant.
Eagerly he waited; and when his chance came he stepped in front of the howdah.  “My bowl, my bowl!” he cried aloud, holding it aloft to attract Royal attention.  The Rajah ordered the elephant to be stopped.  “My bowl, give me some alms!” the beggar cried eagerly.  The Rajah gazed on him with compassion, then slowly he spoke in soft tones, “Give ME something, first!”
The Beggar was puzzled; but the Rajah repeated his request.  Disappointed and annoyed, the beggar snatched a single grain of rice from his wooden bowl and flung it at the Rajah in disgust.
The Rajah looked at him keenly; his face grew sad as he threw something in return into the beggar’s bowl.
Eagerly the man grabbed it.  It was a piece of gold as big as a single grain or rice.  “Fool that I am,” cried the beggar.  “Why did I not give all the rice I had?”
But it was too late.  The Royal had moved on.

Give to the world the best you have,
And the best will come back to you!

Just like the Chinese bamboo, it may take a while for the results to show, but continue to give your best, "and it will be given you, full measure, pressed down and running over, is what will be given you"
