THE SUCCESS OF FAILURE:

THE LIFE of Jesus may be considered,  according to worldly standards, the “greatest failure in the history of the human race.”  At the time of his death on the Cross even the apostles, his most ardent followers, were convinced that his mission on earth, had failed.  They were disillusioned.  Gone were their high hopes of earthly success, and their expectations of pomp and power.

Then on Easter morning, as the first rays of light illumined the sky, the Spirit of Triumph rose from the grave.  Jesus had Risen!  The apostles, at first unbelieving, came forth out of their hiding.  Then the true meaning of Christ’s teaching dawned on them.  His kingdom was not of this world.  Success and failure were not to be valued according to the standards of the world.  Out of death came life.

This principle applies to everything that lives.  Does not the giant oak spring from a tiny acorn?  But before that acorn sprouts forth a little shoot, that in later years becomes the giant oak, the acorn must be buried into the earth.  It must ‘die’! Then out of the death of the acorn comes the life of the oak.

In our own lives, too, this strange drama takes place.  Every little success that we gain means the triumph over some failure that stared us in the face.  Every monument to outstanding achievement marks also the grave of difficulties overcome,  of obstacles crushed, of adversity defeated.
