Joe went to the church everday, just a few minutes. He walked down the isle upto the altar rails, looked up at the crucifix and with head slightly bowed he whispered “Jesus, Joe here”. And after a moment , left.
The pastor noticed this and was very curious, left word with the attendant to have Joe meet him the next day. Joe arrived as usual and went up to the altar rails, whispered his little prayer,:”Jesus Joe here”, and as he was about to leave was informed of the pastors request to see him. Joe went to the presbytery to meet the pastor.
“Joe I see you come everyday, spend not more than a few minutes and leave, what do you do in such a short time”? the pastor asked.
Joe replied: “Sir, I do not know to read or write, and I do not know the regular prayers that folks usually recite. I do however know that Jesus is present when I come in and I just tell Him ‘Jesus, Joe here’, and that makes my day”.
Many years go by and the pastor notices Joe no longer visited anymore. Then one day on a visit to one of the homes for the destitute in a near by parish the pastor recognizes Joe and enquires about the old man. He was told that since Joe arrived, there had been a new ‘joy’ and ‘hope’ among the inmates and everyone loved the company of the amiable old man who never lost his smile and always had a kind word for everyone.
The pastor walks up to his parishoner and Joe’s face lights up. After the cordialities the pastor enquires about Joe’s well being and the secret to his uplifting presence at the home for the destitutes. Very simply, Joe replies: ‘Every day Jesus stops by and says “Joe, Jesus here” His presence makes me the gift I am to all those around me, and that Sir is no secret of what God can do’
