“The road behind us becomes what freed us up for the road ahead.”

“The road behind us becomes what freed us up for the road ahead.”  —Joan Chittister, There Is a Season

When the Berlin Wall was dismantled, most of it was turned into road-building material. The German people say that it  was the best road-building material ever, and they are good at making roads.

In the twenty-eight years of its existence the Wall had divided families, separating parents from children and splitting a nation. It had become a symbol of human brutality and was stained with the blood of the many refugees who tried to cross it.

In its new incarnation, it became the roads by which those same people, that same nation, could move on toward a very different future. Sometimes our roads are lined with pain and regret. But they open up a different kind of future, if we choose to travel on in hope, and trust in what lies ahead.
